New Insects

Saturday 29 September 2018 1 comment
On Tuesday and Thursday we invented new insects. We drew them and wrote a description about them which included what they eat, where they live, a feature that helps them to survive and their life cycle. On Friday we made them. They turned out great! This was an enjoyable way to finish our Science unit on insects and spiders. A BIG thank you to Karyn who came in and ran the hot glue gun station.

Holidays

Some children took home a holiday booklet today to do over the holidays (lots of activities to do if they run out of ideas to fill their day).

Learning Commitment Goals - It can be a good idea to spend a little bit of time on these during the holidays as they all need to completed next term.

On our blog you will find links to Lexia, Study ladder, Languagenut, hit the button and give the dog a bone. The children can do these at home if they would like to. If they have forgotten their password you are welcome to email me for it grace@georgestreet.school.nz

Enjoy the holidays!

Athletics Day-Thursday Week 1 Term 4

A note went home on Thursday regarding athletics day which is on Thursday week 1, term 4. It's really important that the children arrive to school on time (before 9am) so we can promptly get on the bus. The year 3 children leave at 9.05am. The Year 2 children will stay at school with me until 10.30 and then we will join the rest of the school at the Caledonian. Parents are welcome to join us there.

Languagenut

GSNS has just brought a membership for languagenut. This is a fun website where the children (and myself) can learn a new language.

I will glue everyones passwords into their homework books, however they won't have their homework books over the holidays so everyone has brought home a copy of their password for languagenut in their book bags today.

The children will be given some time at school to do this and they can also learn more at home if they would like. I have added the link to languagenut down the right hand side of our blog. I have added some pictures that show what languages your child could learn.

How to use it:

  • Select a language
  • On the left hand side of the screen select 'Vocal Trainer'
  • Choose what you want to learn about
  • Listen to all the words, try to remember them, practice listening, reading and writing for these words and then try the test
  • Try a new category of words to learn\
  • Have fun!

Friday Fun

It was great to see some children up the front with Mrs Y during our Māori session. Optional extra this week was I. Lochie did 'invention' and invented his own chocolate chip biscuit recipe. He brought us in some to try, they were very yummy! We enjoyed doing a science experiment and testing if our hypothesis was right or wrong.

Learning About Light

Our letter of the week for the homework extra was 'L'. Harry, Carlotta's Dad, came in to teach Room 18 a little bit about light. We loved seeing the rainbows the sun created and especially liked you laser lights. Thank you Harry!

Charlotte's Goal

We learnt heaps of information about NZ birds and some te reo from Charlotte on Friday morning. We loved that Charlotte made links to birds using camouflage as a feature to help them survive, which is what we have been learning in science. Amazing job Charlotte! If you are looking for something to do in the weekend, you could go bird hunting for the South Island Kōkako (it is thought to be extinct).

Maori with Mrs Yoeman

On Friday mornings Mrs Yoeman teaches us Māori. When it is your birthday you get to wear the special cloak.

On Tuesday afternoon did a video call with our sister school in Japan. We played bingo, introduced ourselves and shared some of the things that we like.

Tissues

There has been a lot of colds going around and it would be much appreciated if you could give your child a box of tissues to bring along for the class. Thanks very much!

We are very lucky because we have just got some new board games. A big thank you to the PTA for this. This afternoon we spent some time learning how to play these games.
