Science Table

Our science table is looking a little boring now that we no longer have our swan plants. The children have been encouraged to bring something interesting to put on our science table that they have found. It could be a birds nest, an egg, shells, a leaf, rocks etc.

Notices

There have been a few notices sent home recently. 

1. Fund raising event - HOT CROSS BUNS are being sold to raise money for the school.  If you did not find an order form in your child's bag last week and you would like to order some yummy hot crossed buns, please let me know. These were sent home with the oldest or only child at the school.

2. Fund raising event - ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS - details as to how these books might be ordered have been sent home with the children.  If you would like more information but have not seen this notice, please contact me.

and one to mark on the calendar

On Saturday 17th March there will be a "rug stall" market.  Details of this event will follow soon, but it is essentially a chance to sell some once loved items, baking, craft etc and earn some pocket money.  There is a very nominal charge to rent space (which creates some funds for the school) and a great opportunity to pick up some treasures at bargain prices while catching up with friends from school.

Homework

Keeping Ourselves Safe unit starts this week. There will be some additional homework that comes home relating to this. Your child will need your support to complete this. This will not be glued into their homework books, instead it will just come home in their book bag. This homework is intended to prompt discussion at home and does not need to be returned to school.

A handful of children forgot their homework book on Friday. Please can these be put back into their book bag every night to try and prevent these from being left at home.

There will be no homework books sent home in weeks 9 and 10 due to these being short weeks. There will however still be some homework sent home from the Keeping Ourselves Safe unit.

Swimming

A reminder that the last day of swimming is Monday 12th March. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents for helping, we couldn't have gone without your help. Come in and have a look at your child's swimming publishing on the wall. They look great!

What an exciting lunch time!

Some of us were very lucky to see our second butterfly come out of its chrysalis during lunch time today. It was amazing watching this happen!

Learning Commitment Interviews

Learning Commitment Interviews are coming up in Week 7 (Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th of March). Please think carefully about some ideas for both 'strength' and 'challenge' goals. We will be setting these on the night.

Bookings for this can be made at www.schoolinterviews.co.nz using the code 978q4.

Here is an example of the form that we will be filling in. This was also sent home a couple of weeks ago with our class booklet. It is very helpful if you could have thought in advance about your child's 'action',  'character' and 'thinking' strengths.

Word Mate Book $4

A note went home yesterday about word mate books. These are available for only $4. They are very useful during writing time and it encourages children to spell words independently.

 

Swimming!

What a great start to swimming we have had!

Monarch Butterfly

We were concentrating so hard during reading that we didn't even notice that our butterfly had came out of its chrysalis. What a lovely treat for after swimming.

 

 

Important Swimming Change

This note went home with everyone today regarding the small change with swimming. Please let me know if you can help on Monday 12th March. Thank you to everyone who is already helping, we really appreciate it.

Extra for Experts

Wow! Check out all the hard work put into homework this week!

 

Spelling

It's great to see everyone is trying hard to learn their spelling words each week. Mrs Watson, a child's Nana,  comes in every Friday for spelling testing. Mrs Watson puts a tick next to the spelling word that they got right and a dot next to the ones they didn't get right. On a Monday night you will be able to look in your child's homework book and see how they went in their spelling test.

Thank you Christie, Madison's Mum, for bringing in their two kittens this afternoon! We loved having them visit.

 

Monday's Surprise

What a lovely surprise Room 18 discovered this morning...we have no more caterpillars! We learnt that a caterpillar does not have to be on a plant to make its chrysalis. The guesses have already began on how long we think it will take until we get our first butterfly. What do you think?

                                     

Extra for Experts

This is just a reminder that the extra for experts on the bottom of the homework sheet is just an optional task. This does not have to be done. There is time on a Friday morning for children to share this if they have done it. Today we had 4 children share their extra for experts task. They all did a great job at presenting the information they had found in a creative way.

Investigation

This morning when we arrived at school, we discovered that our chrysalis had fallen off the plant and was lying on the table. Room 18 thinks that one of the caterpillars ate the leaves where it was hanging and knocked it off. Ruth, Charlotte's Mum, has carefully taped it onto the wall. We are investigating if it will still turn into a butterfly or not.

Buddy Class

Room 12 is our buddy class this year. This is a year 5 class at G.S.N.S with Ms Harper. Today everyone met their buddy and learnt two things about them. Our buddies were helping us learn how to play our maths games.

Emotive Portraits

We had a great afternoon at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery with John. Our emotive portraits will be on display in Room 18 very soon. They look amazing! A big thank you to all the parent helpers who came along today.
